Ive been looking at a few on craigslist around here, and ive decided that i have to have one. For anyone with seat time, what was it like? Hows the handling? How is it as a daily? Snow driving abilities?

I had a 94 for a couple years. It was great in the snow, but a bit heavy for the chassis. Very easy to pump up the power, but electrical gremlins everywhere, for me at least.

im assuming the understeer was rather bad? this is a car i would like to take on a back road drive without terrifying understeer

It did tend to plow, but you could get it to 'transition' to a more controllable all wheel slide by kicking the clutch a little.

I had a '91 Coupe Quattro for just over a year. Very different from the UrS4/S6, but also similar enough that I can probably provide some input.

For one thing, IIRC, they shared a very similar drivetrain setup. The Coupe had a TorSen Center Diff, manually locking, and was literally a tank. Driving on bald all-seasons, I never even lost grip when I didn't want to, let alone getting stuck. I called it "Tank," because no matter the weather, my massively heavy piece of steel would trundle forwards at blindingly slow speeds.

My car, however, was not turbocharged, and genuinely made no power or torque until around 6000 RPM. Once I got there, I had only 160 horsepower on tap. Thus, the chance of losing grip was never a possibility. In a Turbocharged UrS4/S6, you have both boost AND actual power.

Essentially, I'm useless in your decision, but based on my past experiences with that sort of drivetrain, you should be safe as long as you drive properly in the snow.

EDIT: I live in Connecticut, by the way. Four times this past winter, I found myself on the bus to school because my dad's E60 got stuck in the driveway. He then came inside, took my keys, and proceeded to literally plow the snow all the way to the train station to make his train. A dusting, a couple inches, or even a foot do not make a difference. Early QUATTRO is the best, hands down.

your input is still massively appreciated. I am in Ohio, and last year i got stuck in snow so many times, and Im heavily considering a UrS4. Its a 1993.

I also found an Audi 100 in PGH, thats fully restored, and has the 10v turboed. Which one to get??

The price would be a major deciding factor. Remember especially that these older 5-cylinders are the "Forgotten ones," and are completely non-existent to anyone that isn't a massive Audifan, on Oppo, or German. Thus, resale on these cars can be a bit tricky. I got very fortunate with mine, as it ended up on both Bring a Trailer and Daily Turismo, where I found a one-in-a-million buyer. The S4 would most likely be easier on the resale front, considering it bears the name.

Also, I personally like the 20v more, just because it's slightly more reliable and slightly tougher. That's just personal preference though.

They are within 500 dollars of each other. The Ur is 4500, and restored 100 is 4800.

That's a tough one. Contradicting what I just said about the S4 being the more recognizable name and therefore the better pick, its obviously more tempting to go for a restored old car.

I'd probably say to just go with your gut, whichever you like more. Be sure to check audifans.com to get a better idea of the market for each car, since that's the place nearly every '89-'97 Audi ends up.

I really like the idea of a fully restored 100, its literally an S4 without the name. However i cant sleep thinking about driving a REAL S4. Cant you just swap the 20v head on though?

Off topic: I also have a 190e. Its a 92 2.3

No idea about the head swap. Just the same way you're seeing the S4 as being more desireable because its a REAL S4, buyers will do the same when you go to sell it. If you're concerned about resale and if the S4 is clean/well-maintained/low mileage, that might be the safer bet. If you don't care about resale, the 100 sounds very cool. Extremely cool.

Cosworth? I made my username when I was just starting to dream about my first car, which at the age of 14 I had decided would either be a Cosworth or an E30. The name stuck.

Ironically, I actually ended up finding the perfect car for me when I was 15, a local 190E Cosworth with 66k, a manual transmission, and all records for $6600. I had $6000 to spend. I begged my parents for hours to let me buy it, explaining that it was dirt cheap and I was guaranteed to profit.

It sold a couple months later to someone else, because my parents though I was too young for a car. A month after that, I bought a Dodge Neon.

And that was how I missed the best car I never owned.
